Loving Internationals Near and Far through ReEntry
By Jonathan Nesvig – HCC ReEntry Coordinator
Challenge and Opportunity
At, HCC we care about not just loving Chinese students and scholars while they are here in America but also loving them as they return to China.
This is “ReEntry.”
We love and serve Chinese students and scholars before and after they return to China. With around 3400 Chinese students and scholars at the U of M and an increasing number (at least nationally) returning home each year, this is a great challenge that requires close partnership between us and other organizations in the Twin Cities. Further, ReEntry is a great opportunity because the students and scholars that return to China have the privilege to take what they’ve received in the Twin Cities and multiply it back in China.
What We Do
While students expect to have challenges when they first come to a new country, they often don’t expect to have challenges when they return to their home country. However, returning to one’s home country after a long time abroad is often more difficult. In light of this, HCC supports and offers many resources to students that return home.
HCC provides rides to the airport which are especially helpful when a student has a 6am flight or 10 suitcases (it’s not uncommon!). We also provide help with the cultural transition (and often shock) of returning home. We have “debrief” questions that help students think through their experience in America, identify where and how they’ve changed through their experience, and make a plan for their new life back home.
Further, we provide books in both English and Chinese to help students with specific aspects of their transition back home. We also connect students with other students connected with HCC that have since returned to China. In addition, we connect students with our network of family, friends, and partners across China. Lastly, HCC visits returnee students each year back in China. This is an opportunity for us to be guests in their country and for us to continue to stand by and support the people we love: Chinese students and scholars. It’s a joy to see what God is doing in China among those that have been connected with HCC.
What You Can Do
We do not claim to have everything figured out in ReEntry. Rather, we are learning (on our knees) and we cherish your partnership with us. As more and more Chinese students and scholars return back to China, it is increasingly important and urgent that we work together in loving and serving students and scholars here and back in China. If you feel a burden for Chinese students here and back in China and have ReEntry ideas or needs, please contact me (Jon) at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’d love to work together with you!
